Ernie has allergies. He must be on a special diet of Ultamino food and he gets a very tiny amount of a steroid injection with a very small gage insulin needle daily. This is the only food he can eat without issue. The cost of the food is $70 for a 5.5# bag which lasts about 6 weeks. The steroid injectable compound costs $7 a month. The food is prescription as is the steroid. He is super easy to medicate via injection and eats well. Please read the entire bio. Do not apply if you are not able to comply with his needs. Not doing so will be very detrimental to his health.
GETTING TO KNOW ME
Ernie is a cute-as-a-button purebred exotic shorthair. He is super friendly, playful and always a silly boy. He has a typical flatter face, a plush thick coat and green eyes that weep just a bit at times which is typical of the breed. His gray cream tabby colors are perfect. He is not always a fan of eye wiping and nail trimming so some skill in this is helpful. His foster parent can also talk with you about things that make this easy to accomplish.
Ernie is quite easy-going, having previously lived with another cat. He loves playing, especially with pull strings on a pair of joggers or a sweatshirt. Give him a windowsill to leap up onto and he will enjoy the falling snow, the squirrels and anything else that catches his eye. He enjoys being pet, following his people around or just hanging out.
Ernie has been in care with us for a long time. He came with digestive issues that previously were unresolved for many months. PurrHarmony utilized specialists at the UW Madison Vet School Clinic. Numerous diagnostics and a variety of food trials resolved his issues. The only food that has totally cleared up his digestive system is Royal Canin Ultamino. Other allergy diets were not successful. Additionally, he receives a very small steroid injection daily. (The total amount of the daily medication is less than ½ of a drop with a very small gage insulin needle.)
The results have been wonderful. Ernie is now at an appropriate weight of about 8 pounds up from around 6 pounds. He no longer has any diarrhea. There is no vomiting. He is happy and energetic.
It will be important that his new family have a good relationship with their vet to maintain proper care. The new home must be willing to maintain the special diet and medications for him. If there are other pets in the home, he cannot have any of their food nor any human food (not even treats).
Ernie would be great in a low-key household with one or two other pets or as an only. Kids must be older and must be able to help with his food restrictions (If they do not like their peas, they can’t throw them on the floor for Ernie).
VETTING PROVIDED
To ensure ultimate health, Ernie is neutered, rabies and FVRCP vaccinated, been tested negative for FELV/FIV, has been dewormed and treated for parasites, and is microchipped. To properly determine his allergy issues, numerous special diagnostics were done including blood work. His adopter will receive all diagnostics and results. If the adopter chooses to continue to utilize the UW-Madison Vet School Clinic, they have said they would welcome the sweet boy as a continuing patient.
