GETTING TO KNOW ME

Austin is sweet, smart and stunning boy who uses his paws like hands to make sure you not only pet him in the right spot but also to push you away when he’s had enough of grooming. Austin has a coat that’s soft like a bunny with beautiful silver red colors and kind gold eyes. His tail is never-ending fluff and held straight in the air like a flag for all to enjoy. Austin has a huge, silky coat that will require moderate care. At only 8 months old he will not mature completely until 4-5 years old. He is going to be a giant boy!  He is part of our jazz-paw, octet litter. Think constant biscuits, even in the air! This litter loves playing in water and plunking their toys in the fountains.

Austin loves everything about life! He plays by himself, with people and with the other kittens. Once comfortable (and expect this to take a bit of time), he is going to require he be an integral part of the family.

Austin loves a good game of rough and tumble play with his kitten friends but is not aggressive or dominant in his play style. Kittens do best in pairs so his new home must have an age and energy appropriate feline companion, or his new family might consider adopting one of his siblings or two. A cat savvy kid 10+ would be okay. A dog that would respect and ignore him would likely be fine with slow introductions. He loves toys of any kind but prefers interactive play with cats and people over solitary play. Get ready to run through your house with reckless abandon while trailing a wand toy. Austin is a professional level athlete with cat wheel. At his foster home throughout the day/night he’ll hop on all by himself and sometimes run so fast it sounds like a turbine. After all that play nothing is better than cat trees near windows to watch wildlife. He is a champ at using vertical and horizontal scratching posts to stretch. Keep in mind he is a very curious kitten and still learning so if he has an undesirable behavior, it’s easy to redirect him or teach him a desired behavior with positive reinforcement. Patience, tolerance and understanding are key with a curious giant size kitten. No declawing, not ever! He absolutely adores people, and he sleeps on top of a person most of the time while purring loudly. He absolutely insists on sleeping with his people at night and snuggles in for a good spooning.

Austin is perfect with his litter box, using a huge, open-style box with unscented clumping Petsmart Grass litter. He has grown wonderfully in the past months eating Honest Kitchen Rehydrated food for breakfast and dinner. Fresh, clean water is always available from fountains. Proper litter box husbandry means one litter box per cat, plus an extra. If there are multiple levels to your home, please consider a litter box on each level so kitty isn’t running far to access a litter box. Please plan appropriately for growth with extra-large and sturdy everything.

Starting out in a room as basecamp with introductions and access to the home should be at a speed acceptable and safe for Austin and other pets in the home. Please do your research on proper introductions. It can often take up to 3 months for a cat to feel fully comfortable and integrated into a new family. Patience and understanding is of utmost importance.

Austin has gone through FIP protocol and is cured. Please educate yourself on FIP, and make sure your vet is up to speed on FIP. Feel free to ask any appropriate questions. https://www.fipglobalcats.com/

About the Maine Coon Breed

The largest of all pedigreed cats, the Maine Coon Cat is known as the gentle giant of the cat world. These shaggy, “super-sized” cats are friendly, sweet-tempered, easy to train and sturdy.

Maine Coon Cats are sociable, loyal, and quite intelligent. They enjoy interacting with every family member and tend to go from one lap to another, rather than choosing a favorite. Fond of water, many will watch a dripping faucet in fascination, wash food or toys, or even try to join you in the shower. Maine Coon cats need a moderate amount of human interaction and will insist upon it when you are available. Their daily conversation may include chirps, trills, and purrs as well as an occasional meow.

An adult Maine Coon Cat will have a thick, luxuriant coat that is shorter at the shoulders, longer on the sides, stomach and back legs, with a dramatically long plumed tail. The head is rectangular in shape, the muzzle square and strong. Ears are dramatically large, typically with prominent tufts, and the cat’s intelligence shines forth in its large curious eyes. Maine Coons are a slow-maturing breed that can take up to five years to reach full growth. It is not unusual for a mature male’s weight to reach or exceed 20 pounds, females are usually smaller.

To control shedding, prevent hairballs, and protect against matting, breeders recommend combing your Maine Coon two or three times a week. These grooming sessions need not take longer than five or ten minutes and will keep the shaggy coat looking its best. Most Maine Coon cats do not require regular bathing, but there’s no doubt that an occasional bath will add to the breed’s natural beauty.
