GETTING TO KNOW ME
Do you need an energy drink to get you moving in the morning? Well, you can consider Phoenix your built-in energy drink. Skip the caffein! A little bit quirky, a little sassy, a little bit loving, and always full of spunk, Phoenix will keep you on your toes.
A rarity in rescue, Donskoy is one of very few hairless cats. Unlike the sphynx, the naked gene is the dominant gene in Donskoy where it is a recessive gene for sphynx. Although from the outside the two breeds appear similar and share similar personality traits, genetically they are different. Donskoy are not predisposed to HCM. The naked Donskoy will not grow patches of fur or change up with the seasons like some sphynx do. They are not as oily as some sphynx. They are wrinklier, especially in the head and face. Donskoy are more likely to develop entropion. Phoenix has already had corrective surgery for entropion. Just look at his spectacular odd eyes!
You will find that they (and Phoenix) are full of personality and energy. They will race around like crazy, need lots of playtime, have hearty appetites, engage with imaginary friends, must have a lap and skin to touch, own more fleece than a fabric store, attack a scratching post with vigor and will find every warm spot in the house.
Phoenix is all the above and much more. He is young, enjoys the company of other cats for cuddling and playing. He is not greasy and has clean ears. But since he has no fur to keep him clean, he does get dirty, and he does NOT appreciate baths. Thankfully, a soapy washcloth, a quick rinse and toe cleaning gets the job done. His skin is soft like a chamois.
He can be a stinker with play. He is great with cats who have the same energy and can challenge his shenanigans, but he also will pick on a cat who cannot fight back or who will run. He has a prey drive for the weak.
Humans take some getting used to. Visitors are to be feared and avoided. Quick movements and loud noises will send him running. He will adjust with time but will never be a greeter kitty. When comfortable, he wants hugs, wants to smash his face all over yours and wants to lie on your chest, your legs, any place he can find skin and warmth. He must have a fleece to burrow in or minimally another body (cat or human) to touch.
Mealtime is one of the best times of the day. No one and no cat will keep him from his food. Schedule feeding is strongly recommended because he would easily become overweight if allowed to freely feed.
Phoenix is a busy boy. Expect him on your counters and atop the refrigerator and the cupboards. His free spirit must be allowed to roam.
Phoenix is not the cat for everyone. His new human home should provide lots of stimulation, play time, a warm lap, great food, high spaces, scratching posts. Patience is really important as he gains confidence and comfort.
Phoenix absolutely should start in a safe space to start the acclimation process. Plan for him to be there until he approaches you quickly for hugs and face smashes. Do not be surprised if this takes several weeks. We expect it to. Currently he is fed twice a day and absolutely loves his Honest Kitchen in the morning and Primal at night. He is consistent with his litterboxes enjoying clumping, scent-free litter.
He has never been around a dog so if a dog is in the home, it must be totally laid back and give Phoenix all the space he needs. Human littles are not appropriate. (Please respect that this means no kids for his sake and yours.) His new human should be cat savvy. Baths and nails are not impossible, but willingness to learn and/or experience is helpful.
VETTING PROVIDED
To ensure ultimate health, Phoenix is neutered, rabies and FVRCP vaccinated, been tested negative for FELV/FIV, has been dewormed and treated for parasites, and is microchipped.
